Most of the findings are either loose finds or those deposited in secondary positions. The exception is site BP situated within huge volcanic massif interior, where homogenous remains of a campsite with several knapped stone workshops representing very simple flake technology was investigated. Seven such complexes were observed within the excavated area as well as a complex of spacious dug-out features differing from typical Linear Pottery culture pits. The analysis of the flintworking from this settlement provides new data on the function of this aspect of manufacturing and its context in the first farming communities in Silesia.
Luminescence Dating The Luminescence Dating Laboratory at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford, has been actively involved in the development and application of luminescence dating for more than 50 years. The Laboratory has considerable experience in the dating of sediments and pottery and offers a service for luminescence dating of archaeological, environmental and Quaternary geological contexts.

These footprints were within a soft, damp volcanic ash along a lakeshore shortly after a volcanic eruption. This type of volcanic tuff is known as the Xalnene. Samples of the Xalnene tuff were sent off to the Berkeley Geochronology Center for argon-argon and paleomagnetic dating.
The team that initially found the prints have revisited the dating of the Xalnene tuff at Toloquilla.

Palaeogeographical reconstructions before years ago have been restricted by a lack of sea-level index points and particularly by sparse nearshore geophysical and geological datasets required for such reconstructions. High-resolution bathymetry data collected in the nearshore adjacent to the Mesolithic house site at Howick are integrated with coastal LiDAR, seismic, geological and archaeological datasets to underpin palaeogeographical reconstructions.
The reconstructions illustrate changing coastal landscapes during Early Holocene sea-level rise. Furthermore, they provide a basis for enhancing management of at-risk coastal prehistoric archaeology and a framework to prospect for and protect further vulnerable nearshore archaeological heritage. Due to the combination of eustatic and isostatic effects, modern coastal landscapes rarely reflect those occupied and exploited by prehistoric people.
This suggests that intertidal and marine archaeology is set to become increasingly important in future studies of the coastal populations of prehistoric Britain.
With improvements in methodology and instrumentation, luminescence dating is becoming a much more useful chronometric tool in archaeology. Procedures for dating ceramics are relatively routine and their accuracy has been demonstrated in a number of studies.

Sedimentology, palynology and geochronology have been integrated within ongoing archaeological investigations to reconstruct the Holocene palaeoenvironmental history of the Seille Valley and to elucidate the human-environment relationship of salt production. A sedimentary model of the valley has been constructed from a borehole survey of the floodplain and pollen analyses have been undertaken to reconstruct the vegetation history.
Alluvial records have been successfully dated using optically stimulated luminescence and radiocarbon techniques, thereby providing a robust chronological framework. The results have provided an insight into the development of favourable conditions for salt production and there is evidence in the sedimentary record to suggest that salt production may have taken place during the Mid-to-Late Bronze Age. The latter has yet to be identified in the archaeological record and targeted excavation is therefore underway to test this finding.

However, beginning years ago the moisture balance shifted due to changing orbital precession and vegetation feedbacks. Heretofore, humans have been viewed as passive agents in the termination of the AHP, responding to changing climatic conditions by adopting animal husbandry and spreading an agricultural lifestyle across the African continent.

For decades, researchers believed the Western Hemisphere was settled by humans roughly 13, years ago, a theory based largely upon the widespread distribution of Clovis artefacts dated to that time. Clovis artefacts are distinctive prehistoric stone tools so named because they were initially found near Clovis, New Mexico, in the s but have since been identified throughout North and South America.
Significantly, this research identifies a previously unknown, early projectile point technology unrelated to Clovis, which suggests that Clovis technology spread across an already well-established, indigenous population.

Offerings and Dates This course provides an overview of the principle dating techniques used within archaeology and, more generally, the Quaternary. Students will learn to design dating strategies, evaluate published datasets and build chronological models to interrogate archaeological and palaeoenvironmental hypotheses.
