However, there is nothing automatic about getting a water line hooked up to the ice maker. If you are lucky, there will be a hookup in your kitchen wall near the refrigerator. If not, you will need to run a line to the nearest cold water pipe, which is probably in the floor below your kitchen. An hour project of drilling and running flexible hose is well worth the pleasure of ice on demand. Tapping the Cold Water Line 1 Shut off the main water supply to your home. The folks at GE Appliances recommend using a vertical pipe, if available. If you must use a horizontal pipe, place the hole for the valve either on the top or side of the pipe. Avoid using the bottom of the pipe, as this may draw sediment into the ice maker. Take caution to not allow water to seep into your drill and make sure to only pierce one side of the pipe.

The ice maker line to my refrigerator currently has no shutoff valve and I’d like to add one but I can’t figure out what size the connector is. I purchased a 1/4 inch valve since the ice maker connector I have says 1/4 FCM on it but it did not fit.
It broke down 10 months later fortunately under warranty. It broke down again this week and condenser already needs replacement. I can see the writing on the wall and replace it with a more reliable unit. I don’t recommend this ice maker to anyone Date published: They finally replaced it and now we are going through the same issues with the second ice maker. We built a new home and installed all Kitchen Aid appliances. We moved in to the home in October and already the ice maker has broken twice.

How much might it cost to install a new ice maker? I have the ice maker kit, but don’t have any plumbing experience. Most commonly, a refrigerator’s water line is teed off of the kitchen’s cold water supply line, running behind, or under, the cabinetry and into the back of the appliance. This set up allows for the ice maker’s water supply shut off valve to be located in an easily accessible location under the kitchen sink.
Like many plumbing projects, the skill required to install an ice maker is minimal, but the costs of getting the installation wrong are high, which is why you should hire a licensed plumber to do the work for you. It’s worth noting that many residential water disasters are caused by ruptured water lines, especially the flexible copper tubing often used to supply water to a refrigerator’s ice maker.
This is why it is a wise investment to install an automatic water supply shut off valve such as those made by Water Cop , which can protect your home from extensive water damage caused by a small unseen plumbing leak. These type of auto shut off valves use water sensors, located in strategic locations, to detect pooling water under an appliance or in a basement and to shut off the water supply.
These systems run the gamut from whole-house protection that is monitored hours a day by an off site company to smaller systems that simply shut off the water supply to single appliance and sound an alarm.

Compensation Disclosure One of the biggest challenges that we face in the winter at our little mountain abode is dealing with frozen water pipes. Our cabin is constructed very similar to an RV in terms of how the plumbing is run. Our plumbing is comprised of what I believe is called PEX tubing. The pipes are made of a flexible plastic material which is really easy to work with but it comes with its own set of problems when it becomes necessary to thaw them out.
What To Do About Frozen Pipes The first thing you need to do when you realize that your water pipes are frozen is to not panic and do something that will end up causing you more problems. Keep in mind that your pipes are frozen because the temperature inside the pipes stayed below 32 degrees Fahrenheit long enough for an ice dam to form. The solution to this problem is to safely raise the temperature of the section of the pipe that is frozen until the ice dam thaws out.
This may seem like an easy fix on the surface but if not done properly, you can end up with a big mess on your hands. You should call a plumber and ask them if they think you should shut your main supply valve off. If your pipes have actually cracked or burst, water will leak all over when the ice in them finally thaws so if this were to happen to me, I would shut off the water at the main supply valve to stop the water from leaking all over and quickly call a plumber to fix the pipes.
That is unless it was a repair that my husband thought he could do. We also like to turn our faucets on. Some people have been known to pull out the old propane torch and start pouring the heat to their metal pipes with an open flame to thaw them out but this can pose a significant fire hazard and should NEVER be done!

Where is an RO unit stored? Can RO hook up to a fridge or ice machine? A reverse osmosis system is generally installed and stored under the kitchen sink. Under-counter reverse osmosis systems have a holding tank and several filter phases. The first phase pre-filtration is designed to protect the membrane by reducing fine suspended materials that can clog it. The second phase usually entails filtration to remove chlorine that can damage thin film-material membranes.
The third phase is a semi-permeable membrane to remove a wide variety of both aesthetic and health related contaminants. Next is a pressurized storage tank to hold the treated water. And finally, there is a carbon post-filtration phase to remove any remaining aesthetic taste or odor. An under-counter reverse osmosis system is plumbed to the incoming cold water line, drain, and an independent faucet. Is a Reverse Osmosis System Noisy? This flushing keeps the unit from fouling.
